It happened. What I thought was a “naw, not to me” sort of thing happened. It started on a Friday, so I checked the calendar – nope, not the 13th, must have just been a fluke. But when that error message kept popping up on the screen every 15 minutes and would force a reboot, I knew it was time to face it. Face the fact that I’m now a statistic. My computer crashed, hardware failure! Ack!
But I was prepared! I now preach the praises of backing up your valuable files, and in my case the files of my couples. And, because I had my workflow system in place nothing ,was lost, I was able to keep editing and keep in touch. Except for blogging. For some reason I fell off the earth that way. I ended up in some sort of weird black hole vortex while trying to find my way to wherever I was going without my GPS. Vortex 1, Brent’s sense of direction 0.
Below is an incredible family portrait of some of the external drives I use. I have everything backed up twice, so if one drive fails there’s always the other. The 2 larger silver coloured drives are tough as nails, FireWire800 for lightning speed transfers! They would be great for on location shoots, or a lot of travel say when I get that contract for half of the wedding season in Orange County on the coast of California, and the other half in Australia, or something wild and crazy – so when I get there I’ll be prepared! Ok, back to reality. The tall one to the right is my Time Machine backup of all the files and system configurations on my iMac. This guy came in handy when the hardware to be replaced was the hard drive itself, and it helped bring me back right where I left off. The small one on top is extremely portable. I’ll use that guy for when we head to the cottage for a week or two and don’t want to fall behind. I’ll copy the files to the drive, transfer to my MacBook Pro, edit, backup the final edits on the drive, and have it ready for the double backup when I get home. All the while already having a double backup of the original files at home. Priceless.
